4 Reminders to Keep Yourself Safe This Summer

keep yourself safe this summer

Summertime is officially here, and we could not be more excited! With summer comes the sun, the fun, the heat and the opportunity to be outside with family and friends partaking in all different kinds of activities. Often, however, we are so busy trying to take in the sights and having fun, that we forget to take care of ourselves by doing the basics. This week we have come up with a few reminders to help protect yourself this summer.

Reminder #1 Protect Your Eyes!

It’s easy to leave home without your sunglasses if you’re in a hurry to make it to an appointment, meet a friend or go for a walk. To avoid a possible corneal burn (sunburn in your eyes), make sure you are protecting your eyes with a pair of sunglasses that offer 100% UVA and UVB protection, like these from ILA.

In addition to wearing a great pair of protective sunglasses when you’re out and about, we also want to remind you to wear the appropriate eye gear when you are playing sports or working on other projects where eye protection is recommended to be worn.

Finally, if you decide to go swimming, bring along a pair of goggles. This will protect your eyes from the discomfort of the chemicals in a swimming pool, and will also protect your eyes from the debris of swimming in the lake or ocean. Wearing the correct protective eyewear while you participate in these fun summer activities will surely help in protecting your eyes from the elements.

Reminder #2 Keep Yourself Cool This Summer

You can keep yourself cool this summer by wearing light, airy clothing. Clothing made of seersucker, Madras, hopsack, oxford or linen are summertime favorite because they are all lightweight and have similar textures. They keep part of the fabric away from the skin, which allows your skin to breathe more freely.

Clothing that is light in color reflects sunlight, which will keep you cooler, unlike its dark counterpart that will absorb and trap the heat in. Also consider wearing long flowing, loose-fitting garments. These will keep you cooler than wearing a pair of shorts because they allow for more airflow.

Reminder #3 Stay Hydrated & Eat Healthy

While we should focus on eating healthy and staying hydrated year-round, it’s especially important during the summer months. Eating smaller, well-balanced meals regularly will help your body to function better and provide you with more energy throughout the day.

Also, make sure that you are limiting your intake of alcoholic, caffeinated or other sugary drinks. These types of drinks will cause further dehydration. Instead, replace these sugary drinks with water. Drinking water throughout the day will quench your thirst and keep you more hydrated than any other drink out there.

According to FEMA.gov “Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.”

Reminder #4 Wear Sunscreen

According to an article from everyday health, in “July 2015 Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) examined the results of a 2013 survey and found that only 14.3 percent of men, and 29.9 percent of women, in America reported that they regularly use sunscreen.”

Wearing sunscreen is one of the simplest things we can do to protect ourselves from skin cancer every day. Try to find a lotion with an SPF of 30 or higher. To avoid being burned, it should be reapplied every 2 hours. Furthermore, no sunscreen is sweat or water proof; lotions should be applied 20-30 minutes prior to getting into the water and depending on your specific lotion, should be applied every 40-80 minutes.

Enjoy Your Fun in The Sun!

Summertime is a fun time, full of laughter, joy, and memories being made. As we grow older, it becomes even more imperative that we take care of ourselves so that we can live a long and happy life. ILA hopes that you have a wonderful summer that is full of sun, fun, and laughter. We hope that you take these simple reminders with you to keep yourself safe this summer.
